Gavin Roberts began his musical education as a Chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford. He went on to read Music at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he also held the organ scholarship. During this time, he studied the organ with Nicolas Kynaston, Geoffrey Webber and David Sanger, and subsequently became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. In 2005, Gavin studied for a Master’s degree at King’s College London, where he researched sixteenth-century English music. Meanwhile he was also Assisting Organist to David Trendell and the King’s College Choir for their busy schedule of services, concerts and broadcasts. Since 2002, Gavin has held the position of Assistant Director of Music at St Marylebone Parish Church in London, where he assists Steven Grahl with the running of the church’s professional choir. He has also been instrumental in setting up, and frequently performing in, the evening concert series which runs monthly at the church. In 2007, Gavin set up a youth choir to provide high-quality choral training for the many children who attend the church. Since 2005, this work has also been linked to the neighbouring St Marylebone School for girls where he is Organist and Choirmaster. In addition, Gavin has been directing a school community choir made up of staff, parents and pupils as part of the BBC’s GoSing project, which performed a concert with the BBC Singers at the BBC Radio Theatre. Gavin has appeared regularly on BBC Radio broadcasts as a soloist and accompanist, often giving premiere performances of new works. He has played on numerous recordings for the BBC, ASV, Guild and Priory Records, including a DVD of music by Poulenc, in collaboration with Tim Brown and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge. His most recent recording project was a CD of the Anthems of Herbert Howells with the Collegiate Singers directed by Andrew Millinger. Gavin is Associate Director and Accompanist for the Chandos Chamber Choir, where he assists Andrew Arthur in training the choir for its schedule of concerts. He also frequently performs as a continuo player, soloist or accompanist with the group, often in collaboration with the period instrument ensemble Orpheus Britannicus. Gavin is in demand as a soloist and accompanist on both the organ and piano. He has given solo organ recitals at many prestigious venues around the UK and abroad. As an organ accompanist and continuo-player, he has played a series of concerts Exaudi performing organ and choral works by Judith Weir, with Douai Baroque and The Canterbury Singers performing choral music and epistle sonatas by Mozart, and regularly in the Hampstead and Highgate Festival. In 2007, he appeared with the Helios Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Rathbone, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto no.23 in A major. He has also played as for The Hanover Band, The Joyful Company of Singers, The Orlando Chamber Choir, Guildford Chamber Choir, Kingston Riverside Opera, Eastern Opera and Dorking Choral Society. Gavin teaches piano and organ in the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, and at the Tiffin School for Boys, where he frequently performs with the Tiffin Boys’ Choir conducted by Simon Toyne.
