About the event
'Freedom Cries Out' touches on themes of Homeland, Exile, War, Family, Hope and New Beginnings. Freedom Cries Out features a newly commissioned song cycle by Raymond Yiu, the UK premiere of Shawn Okpebholo's song cycle Words Like Freedom, setting poems of Langston Hughes, and Jake Heggie’s These Strangers.
The programme also includes two newly created songs from Roxanna Panufnik’s opera, Dalia, telling the story of a Syrian refugee girl as she crosses the Mediterranean Sea. We are pleased to be collaborating with Refugee Education UK, who will conclude our concerts with a short talk on their work with refugees.
Our thanks to VW Foundation, Finzi Friends and The Nicholas Boas Charitable Trust for their support.
