The journey traces a heartbroken young man treading the snowy path out of town, seeing in each frozen stream or quiet village warm memories and high hopes. Increasingly his imagination gives way to delusion, leading him to wish away his youth in pursuit of a scene worthy of his desolation.
Through this 24 song cycle Schubert composed some of his most poignant, abstract and lively music, challenging for both the singer and pianist.
